Elio Perrone

Region: Piedmont

Piedmont, ItalyElio Perrone Tasmorcan Barbera dAsti is a beautiful expression of the Barbera grape from the appellation of Asti in Piedmont. In the words of Antonio Galloni for Wine Advocate, "Stefano Perrone remains a reference-point producer for Moscato." In 1999 Stefano took on a new challenge with Barbera when he purchased the esteemed Mongovone vineyard in Asti. He replanted half of Mongovone in 2001 and uses the younger vines for Tasmorcan, a beguiling wine capturing the ethereal freshness for which Asti is known. Tasmorcan means badger in Piemontese, a name chosen because the animals kept eating the newly-planted Barbera vines! 100% Barbera, the wine was aged for 6-10 months in large oak barrels. Galloni rated the 2010 vintage of Tasmorcan 90 points, calling it "fabulous." We find it a true red wine gem! Elio Perrone Tasmorcan Barbera dAsti is ruby red in color. It offers a delightful nose of red berries, cherries, violets and French oak. Medium in body with perfect acidity and soft tannins, it offers intense flavors of raspberries, cherries, vanilla and spice. This food-friendly red will drink well for 5-7 years. It is long, ripe and polished on the finish.Enjoy Elio Perrone Tasmorcan Barbera dAsti with lasagna, veal Milanese and aged cheeses.
